Elias was the son of Stephen Matney, born in 1795 in Nelson County, Kentucky and Eleanor Cravat, born in 1796 in Tennessee. Twin sons Urich (b. 1833) and Elias (b. 1833)

Served in Company G Missouri Home Guards during the Civil War. Came to Webster Co. in 1850. He was married to Susan Copley Dec. 4, 1856 in Webster Co., Mo. Elias and Susan had 10 sons and 1 daughter
