Elderly and Homeless Will Receive Lodge Under Terms of Will


LA CRESCENTA, Nov. 22.— To the elderly and homeless members of the Verdugo unit of the International Sunshine Society will he given the home of Mrs. Effie Woodward Fifield, 80-year-old widow of James Clark Fifield, Minneapolis publisher, according to terms of a deed drawn in 1935.

Mrs. Fifield died yesterday, following an extended illness.

The thirteen-room home, called Twelve Oaks Lodge, was constructed by Mr. and Mrs. Fifield with a view of some day presenting it to the society as a refuge for elderly members.

Mrs. Fifield was a novelist and after her husband's death assumed management of his publishing interests.

The Verdugo Hills unit of the society was incorporated in 1935. Trustees of the property were headed by Haakon Berg.

Funeral services were arranged yesterday for Mrs. Effie Woodward Fifield, 80-year-old novelist and widow of Joseph Clark Fifield, former Minneapolis publisher. Mrs. Fifield died Sunday night at her La Crescenta home. Under an agreement entered into before the death of her husband, the thirteen-room Fifield family home in the Verdugo Hills will go to the International Sunshine Society, an institution devoted to the care of the elderly and needy. The body will he sent to Minneapolis for burial under the rites arrangements.

Mrs. Effie Woodward Fifield, 80, novelist and widow of the late James C. Fifield, a former Minneapolis publisher, died Sunday night at her home in Verdugo City, Calif. Mr. Fifield, who died in Minneapolis June 5, 1933, was a publisher of legal, physicians and hospital directories. He was the founder of the James C. Fifield Co. Funeral services for Mrs. Fifield will be in Minneapolis Friday.

Mrs. Fifield, 50 Years City Resident, Is Dead
Mrs. Effie Woodward Fifield, 80, a resident of Minneapolis 50 years, died at her home in Verdugo City, Calif., Sunday. She was the widow of James Clark Fifield. The couple were partners in a publishing business. She edited the magazine The Housekeeper, and was the author of many books, and articles. In their later years they built an estate at Verdugo City, which will be given to the International Sunshine society for use as a home for aged. Funeral services will be Friday at 3:15 p. m. at Lakewood chapel. Interment will be in Lakewood cemetery.
