JAMES ALMER ELROD SR.

James Almer Elrod Sr., 89, formerly of 2133 Southern St., died at 2:20 a.m. today in a Rome health-care center following an extended illness.

He was born in Floyd County on Sept. 18, 1898, son of the late William Jasper Elrod and Rebecca Minyard Elrod and had lived here all of his life. For 27 years prior to retirement, he operated Floyd Grocery Store. He was a member of Desota Park Baptist Church, the independent Order of Odd Fellows and Rebekahe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Jennings Elrod, July 14, 1966, and a sister, Mrs. Lucille Edwards, July 22, 1978.

Surviving are four sons, James Woodrow Elrod, Roanoke, Ala., Kenneth C. Elrod, Sarasota, Fla., James A. Elrod Jr., Rome, and Harold Elrod, Jonesboro; one daughter, Mrs. Herschel (Christine) Bailey, Rome; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Heritage Chapel of Jennings Funeral Home with Dr. Clarence Drummond and the Rev. Bill Adams officiating. Interment will be at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.

The body will lie in state at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. tonight. At other hours they will be at the home of the daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Herschel Bailey, 2 Rockwood Place.

Pallbearers are asked to meet at Heritage Chapel at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.
