Leonard Smith peacefully left us on October 31, 2013. At the time of his death he was 77 years old. Leonard was born on April 25, 1936 to the parents, Lawrence Smith and Winne (Berryhill) Smith, in Cherokee North Carolina. Leonard was a descendant of Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation and Creek Nation in Oklahoma. Leonard enlisted in the Army at the age of 17 and served two terms with being honorably discharged. After serving, he returned to Oklahoma for a short period of time. He participated in the Relocation Program and moved to Oakland, California. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Betty Smith and Barbara Smith, and brothers Richard Smith and David Smith. Services will be held at Tallahassee Indian Methodist Church with Reverend Sammy Chupco officiating in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Tallahassee Cemetery under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home of Okmulgee.
