Carmel is the daughter of William & Bridget (née Devereux) Prendergast. Her father came from Leixlip in County Kildare, her mother was from Dungarvan in County Waterford.
Carmel went to school in Limerick and was in the same school with the actor Richard Harris and his sister. Her father William Prendergast was a Veterinary Surgeon with the Department of Agriculture and eventually moved the family to Clontarf in Dublin.
Carmel & Jim married in the United States where Jim worked for the Guiness Brewery Company and Bristol Myers. Both their daughters were born in America, Doreen in Quincy, Massachusetts & Patricia in Chicago.
After many years they returned to Ireland and settled in Sandymount, County Dublin.
