Klaas was in military service from April 28, 1858 to April 27, 1863 in Netherlands.
He then went to work as a blacksmith for Durk van der Schors in Grootegast, Groningen, Netherlands. Durk van der Schors was the owner of the shop.
On May 5, 1866, Durk van der Schors passed away, leaving his widow Martha (Boekholt) and two young sons, Ransom and Luurt van der Schors.
On June 15, 1867, Klaas Fongers married Durk's widow, Martha (Boekholt) van der Schors in Grootegast, Groningen, Netherlands. Klaas raised her two sons as his own.
On March 27, 1868, Klaas and his wife Martha had their first child, a girl they named Hebeltje Fongers. She was born in Grootegast, Grootegast Municipality, Groningen, Netherlands.
On June 15, 1868, Klaas Fongers age 28, left from Grootegast, Groningen, Netherlands with his wife and 3 children, going to America. This would be his wife Martha (Boekholt) (van der Schors), her two sons, Ransom and Luurt van der Schors, and the daughter they had together Hebeltje Fongers. They left for economic improvement. Klaas was a blacksmith and belonged to the Christian Reformed Church. - (Dutch Emigration Record 1847 - 1877 by Robert P. Swierenga)
We believe that his wife Martha (Boekholt) (van der Schors) Fongers and his daughter Hebeltje Fongers probably died on the ship coming to America. As there isn't any record of them being in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
On Sept. 10, 1869, Klaas Fongers married again to Evertje (van der Leest) van der Veen.
1870 census - Klaas and his 2nd wife, Evertje are listed along with their daughter Flora and Klaas's two step children, Luurt and his brother Rinze (They and are listed under the last name Fongers, but their real last name was Van Der Schors)
1880 census - Klaas Fongers and his family are living at 193 Logan St. Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan.
1884 Census - Klaas Fongers and his family are living at 193 Logan St., Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan.
