He was born as Fedde Spaan, son of Simon Spaan & Rena Visser. He immigrated to America with his parents & siblings in 1906. He adopted the name Fred. He married Agnes Van Doren on Sep 7, 1916 in Grand Rapids, MI. They had no children. Fred had a wooden leg due a fight he was in as a young man. He worked at the Pacific Coast Borax Co. in Wilmington, CA.
