She was born as Rinsje Visser, on Nov 18, 1870 in Lemmer, Netherlands. She was the daughter of Steven Rinses Visser & Afke Andries Spiekholt. In 1888, she married Simon Spaan. In 1906 with 9 of their children, they immigrated to America. After arriving in America, they had 4 more children. Rinsje changed her name to Rena.
