Civil Rights Activist. She founded SCLC/Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now, Inc. (W.O.M.E.N.), the sister organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1980 she created the Drum Major For Justice Award, which is held annually near April 4th the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., awardees are recognized by their contributions to the cause of freedom, equality, and achievement in their professional field. Her father served as president of the Memphis chapter of the NAACP and her mother was involved in community organizations. She was the wife of civil rights leader the Rev. Joseph E. Lowery, President Emeritus of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Her awards include: Rev. Hosea Williams, Harry Belafonte, Rosa Parks, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Crosby, the Original Tuskegee Airmen and many others. She died from a massive stroke.
