Madge Connell was born in Co. Kerry in 1901 according to her school records.

It's believed her parents may be Daniel & Helen (née O'Sullivan) O'Connell and her birthdate is July 23.

Always called Madge, she was born hearing impaired. When still a young child, she was sent to Dublin to be educated by the Dominican Nuns and lived at the girls only school they ran in Cabra called the 'Institution For the Deaf & Dumb at St. Mary's'. The school still exists, now known as 'St. Marys School for Deaf Girl's'.

In 1943, Madge married Morgan McGowan in Dublin. They lived on Baggot Street where Morgan has his cobbler's shop. During the years Madge lived at St. Mary's, Morgan lived at the neighboring school run by the Christian Brothers called 'St Joseph's School for Deaf and Dumb Boy's'.

Marrying later in life, they had no children.

✞ Madge McGowan is buried with Morgan, her husband of 34 years, in the McGowan family plot at Glasnevin Cemetery. She's with his mother Alice, twin sister Martha, brothers John, Matthias & Michael and sister Marianne.
