Captaen Tomás de Móinbhíol

Thomas was the 4th of 6 children born to Capt. James & Anne (née Derham) Mansfield of Skerries.

Like his father Capt. James Mansfield, grandfather Capt. Thomas Mansfield & great-grandfather Capt. Michael Mansfield, Thomas became a Master Mariner, spending his life at sea involved in the coasting trade.

In 1874 he married Mary Anne King at St. Patrick's in Skerries. They had two children, sons James & John Joseph.

His elder son James followed the family tradition of life on the water, often on Capt. Thomas' ship St. Patrick. He eventually emigrated to America, passing away about 1947 in New York. The date of his passing and location of his grave are unknown. John, his younger son, became a baker in Dublin City & one of the Patriot Heroes who would fight, sacrifice & suffer so that Ireland would be a free & united nation, a fight that continues to this day.

Later in life, after his sailing days ended, the Captain involved himself in matters local to Skerries, including the Harbour Improvement Committee.

✞ Captain Thomas Mansfield is buried with his wife Mary Anne in the family plot at Holmpatrick Graveyard in Skerries. Buried with him are his son John, daughter in-law Elizabeth and 3 of his 10 grandchildren, Alice, Seán & Cathal.
Over Capt. Thomas' grave, his grandson Liam erected the large and now well known Holmpatrick landmark, The Mansfield Family Memorial Stone.
