Ms Wain was stabbed to death in her own home by a neighbour, at flats in Westmorland Road, Wyken, Coventry, on October 19th last year.
On Tuesday, the neighbour, aged 44, a former Walsgrave Hospital nurse, was jailed for life for murder. She had denied the charge on the grounds of diminished responsibility, but was convicted by a jury and will now serve at least 13 years before she will be considered for release.
Ms Wain, aged 39, had three younger sisters and three brothers. They, and her mother, were in court for the verdict. Speaking on behalf of the family, her sister Pamela, who lives in Wyken, Coventry, said: "The loss of Elaine has, and will continue to be, very difficult for us all to come to terms with. She was a wonderful, caring, loving person... happy with life and everything in it. She meant everything to us. Elaine took what life threw at her, as difficult as this could be, as best she could and always with a smile."
The jury at Birmingham Crown Court was told that on the night of the killing, the neighbour had gone to Ms Wain's flat to try to borrow money. The prosecution said she committed the killing in frustration at being refused.
Ms Wain's sister said: "Elaine's neighbour, not friend, had preyed on her for months prior to the murder, taking advantage of her trusting nature and vulnerability.
"The neighbour has a life sentence of 13 years, but as a family our sentence is to live the rest of our lives without our Elaine."
