LaBerle Cook Gutzman

Early Life | Education: LaBerle was the firstborn of Joseph Isaac and Nora Adelia Watkins Cook. She was born on September 3, 1915, in Vernal, Utah. She graduated from Vernal High School and Utah State Agricultural College in Home Economics.

Life's Work | Service | Interests: LaBerle worked for Farm Security and taught school in Vernal, Utah; Fort Duchesne, Utah; Gallup and Albuquerque, New Mexico. On October 11, 1941, LaBerle married Wilson C. Gutzman. Their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 8, 1955. She and her husband served a mission to teach the Cherokee Indians in Tahlaquah, Oklahoma. Upon their return they spent several years working in the Provo Utah Temple. LaBerle is remembered for her courage, her tenacity, her ability to get things done, her quiet resolve, her service to her husband and family and her quiet unwavering faith in the Savior and the Gospel. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served as a visiting teacher, taught early morning seminary, Primary, was a stake canning chairman and served in various other positions in the Church. LaBerle's greatest source of joy was her family. LaBerle Cook Gutzman, of Provo, Utah, passed away November 27, 1998, after enduring a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. She was 83.

Survived By: One son: Barry Lynn Gutzman (Sherry), Provo, Utah; two daughters: Candace Hsiao (Jen-chieh), Salt Lake City, Utah; Marjean Bigelow (Dan, Jr.), Portland, Oregon; 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter (four months old, the delight of her last few moments of life); two grandsons are serving missions in Central and South America; two brothers: Sterling Cook (Mary), Maybell, Colorado; Jack Norwin Cook (Marie), Salt Lake City, Utah; and sister, Sybil Howard (Paul), Salt Lake City, Utah.

Preceded In Death By: Her parents and one granddaughter.
