Hughes Is Dead

Topekan, Son of English Author, Succumbs at Home Here After Long Illness

George Hughes, 73, prominent Topekan for many years, died early today in a local hospital. He had been ill since last fall, but his condition was not serious until about two weeks ago.
Mr. Hughes was a son of Thomas Hughes, noted English writer and author of "Tom Brown's School Days."
Born in Brighton, Eng., September 26, 1865, Mr. Hughes came to the United States when he was 17 years old. At that time, he went to his brother's ranch, in Old Mexico, near the border.
Back to England for Time
Mr. Hughes returned to England for a time, then came back to the United States with the Western Land and Cattle Company, which was organized in England but operated ranches in America.
When he was 25 years old, Mr. Hughes settled in Chase county, Kansas, and operated a farm there. He also bought an interest in the famous "101 Ranch" which at the time maintained a feeding ranch in Chase county.
Started Sand Plant Here
In 1903, Mr. Hughes came to Topeka. He founded a sand plant at the foot of Topeka avenue, and engaged extensively in farming, owning land a mile north of town between Central avenue and the Rochester road.
Mr. Hughes attempted to start a co-operative movement in Topeka with organization of the Shawnee Co-Operative association. His father had started a similar venture in England.
Favored Single Tax Plan
For fifty years, Mr. Hughes devoted much effort in behalf of the Henry George movement, embodying Henry George's philosophy of a single tax. Only two years ago he started a class at the high school in the interest of the movement, and it has been carried on by some of Mr. Hughes' close friends.

Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Lena Hughes, of the home; a daughter, Miss Carolyn Hughes, now in Jamaica, West Indies; two sons, Thomas R. Hughes, of Fresno, Calif., and Henry George Hughes, of Topeka, and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace cathedral. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.
