Architect Dies At Age of 52
H. George Hughes, 52, a Topeka architect, died Saturday at his home, 2103 Burnett Road.
Born at Hymer, Feb. 24, 1908, he attended Topeka schools and was a graduate of Topeka High School. He also was graduated from the University of Kansas School of Architecture. After graduation he was employed by C.J. Nichols of Kansas City.
During World War II he served as an Army engineer in both the European and Pacific theaters. Following the war, he was associated with the Glover and Newcomb architecture firm.
About three years ago he formed his own firm known as the Hughes, Knight and Remmele, at 1907 Gage.
Among the buildings he helped design are the Berryton and Richland elementary schools, the last two additions to the Wanamaker Grade School, the Beachem Grocery Store in California Acres Shopping Center and the additions to the First Christian and Potwin Presbyterian churches.
He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, Lions Club and the First Congregational Church of Topeka.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Nancy Hughes, one daughter, Suzanne Hughes, and one son, Roger Hughes, all of the home; one brother, Thomas Hughes of Los Angeles, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Carrie D'Augostine of Lakeside, Conn.
