Samuel was the fourth of seven children born to John Bengry and Anne Jones.


He was baptized on the 23rd July 1832 at the Old Street Chapel (Primitive Methodist), Ludlow, Shropshire.


He married Ellen Hammond in 1853 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.
