Trenton Tunnell, Jr. died August 20 after a brief illness. Born in Atlanta on March 9, 1926, he was the son of Constance (Cone) and Trenton Tunnell. Trenton was raised in Ansley Park, Brookwood Hills and Buckhead and attended E. Rivers Elementary School and North Fulton High School before entering The Citadel at age 16. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps; then attended Emory University and the University of Georgia, where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He left the Classic City, as he preferred to call Athens, and began working for the General Insurance Company of America where he met Doreen Ryan, whom he married in June, 1953. By 1956, he had gone to work for S. Hammond Story in his surety bond agency where Tunnell established many loyal business relationships that continued for over four decades. In 1962, after Mr. Story's death, Tunnell and Bill Gunter bought the Agency and built it into a thriving business as the mid-century construction of the interstate highway system continued. The S. Hammond Story Agency was later sold to Alexander & Alexander and is now a part of AON. Tunnell's devotion to Georgia football never wavered and he, Doreen and their close friends Eunice and Lowry Gillespie were fixtures near the 50 yard line for over 30 years. Trenton is survived by his three sons, Trenton Tunnell III, Spencer Tunnell II, both of Atlanta, and Steven Ryan Tunnell, of Palm Springs, California. He is preceded in death by his wife Doreen, his sister Constance Tunnell Bond and his daughter-in-law, Lisa Martin Tunnell (Mrs. Spencer Tunnell). The body was cremated and his family plans a graveside service on Tuesday, August 27 at 1:30PM at Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Drive, S.W., Atlanta, GA 30310. The Tunnell family warmly welcomes friends to a reception following at the home of Spencer Tunnell. The family is grateful for the assistance provided by the caring and sensitive service of the many associates of Personal Care, Inc. and the staff and residents of St. Anne's Terrace.
