William L. "Bill" Mercer, 85, of Wilson, died Monday, August 5, 2013.

He wss a son of the late Thomas B. and Iva Worrell Mercer and was also preceded by a sister, Isadore Baker.

Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Barbara Mattox Mercer; proud father of sons, Joel William Mercer (Jacque) and Steven Paul Mercer (Karen); grandfather to Joel Richard Mercer (Jennifer), Andrew Willianm Mercer, katherine M. Mattox, Stephanie Lynn Joyner (Cameron Scott) and Christopher Gatling; great-grandfather of Audrey, Olivia, MacKenzie and Logan; sisters, Helen Ruth Page, Ruby Thorpe, Louise Roberts, Faye Tew and Linda Lamm; brothers, Roney T. Mercer.

Growing up on the family farm in the Rock Ridge comunity, he graduated from Rock Ridge High School in 1946 and did coursework at NC State University. He served in the Air Force for four years and was promoted to Staff Sergeant. Upon release, he joined the State Department of Labor and went on the work for the federal department in the Wage and Hour Division retiring in 1989 with 26 years of service.

In Wilson, he served in a variety of church roles including deacon, finance chairman, Sunday School leader, Baptist Men and the scouting programs for Pack 8 and Troop 8 at First Baptist. In scouting he served with the Wilson District and East Carolina Council earning many awards including Silver Beaver, God and Country and Wood badge. He traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch twice serving the Association of Baptist for Scouting in addition to the East Carolina Council.

Bill enjoyed fishing, woodworking and working in his yard kand garden. As a Master Gardener for many years he completed coursework with the Extension Service in order to provide information and support to gardeners across the county. He had a servant's heart and helping others daily was an expression of his Christian faith.
