Elijah Hendrix Gatlin was a native of east Tennessee, having been born in Bradley County near the town of Cleveland on Feb. 17, 1880. He moved to Choctaw County, Mississippi, with his wife and five children in 1912. He was a farmer all his life. He was a Methodist and a Mason. He was married to Onie Augusta Dunn, also a native of east Tennessee. They raised nine children to adulthood, six sons and three daughters, all of whom led successful lives and with most surviving into old age. Known as 'Lige' as a young man in Tennessee, Elijah Gatlin died Nov. 15, 1953, at the age of 73 following a battle with cancer and an earlier stroke.
