Mr. Obersts' birth name was Lorenz, but he later changed it Lawrence.

Lorenz Oberst emigrated from Baviere at the age of 30 years. He arrived at the Port of New York, United States on October 24, 1854, having departed Le Harve, France on the ship Russell of Boston. Traveling with Lorenz were his wife Anna age 28, daughter Mary Eva age 2 and infant daughter Margaret age 9 months. His occupation was listed as that of a Farmer.

Six years later, the 1860 US Federal Census, lists Lawrence as the new spelling for Lorenz in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was then employed as a Musician, and had three more children born in Ohio; son Adam age 4, son Anthony age 3 and daughter Ann age six months. Eva was age 8 and Margaret was age 6. They had a personal estate value of 100 dollars. By 1862 they moved to Kentucky where daughter Louisa was born that year.

Ten years later, the 1870 US Federal Census, lists Lawrence age 48 having relocated to Egg Harbor City, Atlantic County, New Jersey. He was 48 years old, employed as a musician, had a personal estate of 600 dollars and real estate worth 1,200 dollars. Wife Anna M was age 46, Mary Eva was age 18, Margaret was age 16, Adam was age 15, Anton was age 13, Anna was age 11 and Louisa was age 8.

Ten years later, the 1880 US Federal Census, lists Lawrence age 58 having relocated to 92 North 6th Street, Philadelphia, PA and was employed as a Teacher of Music. Wife Mary age 56 was keeping house, Mary Eva age 27 was a Dressmaker, Margaret age 25 was also a Dressmaker, Adam age 24 was a Printer, Anthony age 22 was a Musician as his father and Louisa age 18 was at home. Daughter Anna is not listed, as she had married by then.
