Daniel was born at St. Lawrence, NY, the son of Isaac and Betsy Carlton Mead. On May 8, 1851, he married Harriet M. Scott, at York (Medina County) Ohio. By 1860 they had moved near the small village of Charlotte, in Eaton County, MI, where he was engaged in farming.
By 1860, they had three children, Wealthy R. (6 yrs), Arabelle S. (4 yrs.) and Carrie D. (7 mos.) A son, Edwin was born a few years later.
At the age of 46, he moved west to Ft. Buford, Dakota Territory, located at the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers, on the North Dakota-Montana border. He was employed as a carpenter at the Fort.
This fort was the major supply depot for the military during the Indian Wars of the great plains in Montana, including Custer's Battle of the Little Big Horn and the Battle of the Big Hole with Chief Looking Glass and Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe. This also the place where the famous Hunkpapa Lakota Chief Sitting Bull finally surrendered after returning from Canada with the remainder of his people.
Daniel was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, originally a Master Mason in Butler Lodge No. 88, MI. He became a Charter Member No. 8, of Yellowstone Lodge No. 88, at Ft. Buford, which was the first Masonic Lodge Chartered in what is now North Dakota.
After his time spent at Ft. Buford he returned to farm in Eaton County, MI, and after the passing of his first wife, he married Jane E. Grant in 1892.
Daniel and Jane continued to live in the Kalamo area until his death in 1902.
