Dr. Henry C. Hall, professor emeritus from the University of San Francisco, died today at a local hospital following a short illness.

He was a professor and director of courses in school administration and supervisor of teachers at USF from 1951 to 1964. Prior to that period, Dr. Hall had been administrative assistant to the San Mateo county superintendent of schools.

Dr. Hall. 72, entered education in 1915 as principal of Half Moon Bay elementary school and, from 1922 to 1945, he was superintendent of schools for the city of San Bruno.

Dr. Hall's father was also a noted educator. The senior Hall was superintendent of schools in Corte Madera in the early 1900's, and a school in Larkspur was named in his honor.

The retired educator started work toward his bachelor's degree while at Half Moon Bay. He received it in 1939 from San Jose State college -- 24 summer sessions later. He earned his doctorate in 1951 from Stanford at the age of 59 the oldest person to earn the doctorate in education from Stanford.

Dr. Hall moved to Santa Cruz in 1964 from San Bruno. He owned a summer home in Santa Cruz since 1959. The family home is at 895 - 32nd avenue.

He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic church, Capitola; past president and life member of the California Teachers association; past president and life member of the National Educational association.

Survivors include his wife, Edna, Santa Cruz; a son, Harry Hall, Martinez; two daughters, Mrs. Edna Phillips, Santa Cruz, and Mrs. Mary Roach, Salinas; a brother, George Hall, San Rafael, and a sister, Mrs. Mercy Brevig, San Rafael; also eight grandchildren.

The rosary will be recited in St. Joseph's church at 8 p.m. Thursday. A requiem low mass will be offered at the church on Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery. White's mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
