Oddly, Hezekiah Porter, Sr. became the guardian for three of Nathaniel and Esther Smith's children, among them, Gideon Smith, the future husband of his daughter Sarah Porter.
Sarah Porter bore a son out of wedlock in 1727. Her "confession" to the Rev. Samuel Woodbridge in the records of the First Congregational Church of East Hartford dated 08 Jan 1727 names the child's father as one Peter Buel. In the same church record is found the baptism of Sarah's "base born son" Nathaniel Porter by the same Rev. Samuel Woodbridge. (The Rev. Woodbridge is also buried in Center Cemetery.)
Three years later Mr. Gideon Smith (1709-1772) married Sarah Porter in the First Congregational Church of East Hartford on 18 Jun 1730. They were happily married for 40 years until Sarah's death and lie buried together in Center Cemetery.
