Rock Rapids, IA: Gerrit Kooiker age 93, of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday, November 20, 2006 at Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab in Rock Rapids, IA. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church in Rock Rapids, with Pastor Jeff Poppinga, officiating. Burial will follow in the First Baptist Church Cemetery at George. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3-8 p.m with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at the Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.
Gerrit J. Kooiker was born April 17, 1913, on a farm near Middleburg, IA, the son of Lambert and Gertrude (TeSlaa) Kooiker. When Gerrit was four his family moved to a farm north of Hull, IA where he attended country school. On February 25, 1937, Gerrit was united in marriage to Alice DeGroot at Alices parents home at Inwood. They made their home on a farm near Hull until 1940, when they moved to a farm south of Rock Rapids. He and Alice farmed and raised their family on this farm. In 1985, they moved into Alvord to retire.
During Gerrits life he enjoyed everything about farming, especially the horses. In his pastime, he would care for horses and tinker with two cylinder John Deere tractors. In his early forties, Gerrit was born again and his faith in Christ changed his life and deeply affected his family. In December of 2003, Gerrit became a resident of the Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Rock Rapids where he died this past Monday afternoon, November 20, 2006 at the age of ninety-three.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Alice of Rock Rapids; four sons, Leroy and his wife, Gladys Kooiker of Rock Rapids; Roger and his wife, Janelle Kooiker of Rock Rapids; Glenn and his wife, Pam Kooiker of Omaha, NE; and David and his wife, Tammy Kooiker of Rock Rapids; along with eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren; one brother, Donald Kooiker of Rock Valley; and one sister, Viola (Peter J.) Van Driel of Rock Valley, IA. Gerrit was preceded in death by his parents, Lambert and Gertrude; and two brothers, Ralph and Albert Kooiker.
