Robert was the second of seven children of James Barber and Elizabeth Wright. He was born and raised in Columbia in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and was only five when the war for independence began.
In 1807 he married Catharine Mathiot. They had at least three children: James, Ann, and Susan. Robert was a stone mason and built many houses in Columbia.
Robert died at the age of 82.
