John was a member of the Sixth Battalion in 1777. In 1780 the Sixth Battalion became the Second Battalion. There were 8 companies in each battalion, John was a member of the Fifth Company - Pine Grove (sometimes called Tulpehocken). The companies were divided into eight equal numbered "classes", John was in the 8th Class (Morton Montgomery).

John Lengel's brothers who were in the Revolutionary War: Frederick - served in the 6th Company-Tulpehocken, Simon-served in the 6th Company-Tulpehocken, Stephen-served in the 8th Company-Heidelberg, Thomas-served in the 8th Company-Heidelberg, Conrad-served in John's Company-Pine Grove
