George Kilp, 88, a resident of Oshkosh for nearly 70 years, died Saturday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at Mercy Hospital. He had been seriously ill only a week and before that time was able to be about and was an ardent follower of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, listening to radio reports daily of the games played.
Mr. Kilp was born in Germany, May 15, 1852. His parents, Balthasar & Mary Kilp, came to the United States when he was 2 years of age. They settled on a farm in Sheboygan county and in 1871 at the age of 19 years Mr. Kilp came to Oshkosh and had lived here since that time.
He entered the employ of the Chicago & Northwestern railroad on coming to this city and became yardmaster in which capacity he served for many years. He was interested in civic affairs and served a number of years ago as an alderman for the Third Ward.
He was married May 16, 1875 to Miss Emma Wegener, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Wegener, pioneer residents of Oshkosh. His wife died June 17, 1933, since which time he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. A. L. (Clara) Schwalm, 357 Washington boulevard. Mr. Kilp was the last surviving member of a family of five children.
His survivors are his daughter, Mrs. Schwalm; a son, Joseph H. Kilp, Chicago; and two grandchildren, A. Thomas Schwalm and Miss Catherine Schwalm, of Oshkosh. There are also a number of nieces and nephews surviving.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Spikes & McDonald funeral home with the Rev. A. A. Chambers, pastor of St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Menasha officiating in the absence of the Rev. William R. Otto, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, of this city, who is absent from the city. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home this afternoon after 4 o'clock and until the time of the services.
