John Conway Jr. died at his home in the village of Argyle, April 8, 1920, at the age of 48 years. He was born on a farm in the town of Argyle and lived in the neighborhood of his birth practically all his life. He had been well all winter until February when he was taken ill with the flu which developed tuberculosis, and his decline was rapid.
Realizing that he would not be able to look after his farm work for the season he rented his farm and moved his family into the village the first of April. Soon after he purchased a home, and the family moved into it two days before his death. During his lifelong residence in this immediate vicinity, he made friends of all his acquaintances, and was a highly respected citizen as was attested by the unusually large attendance at his funeral when the church was taxed far beyond its normal seating capacity.
He was married to Miss Tessie Smith, April 23, 1903, and to them six children were born, wo of whom died in infancy. Those living are Mary, Leo, Bernard and Maurice. Thus, is left a loving wife and children without the protecting care of a kind husband and father.
The deceased was secretary of St. Joseph's Church and will be greatly missed in that congregation. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Ryan, of Blanchardville, and Mike of Beloit.
The funeral was held at St. Joseph's church Monday morning, Father McNulty preaching an eloquent and comforting sermon from Matthew 9:18.
The pallbearers were O.T. Olson, Ole Tollakson, John M. Flanagan, G.S. DeVoe, J.W. Gavigan and F.C.O. Muenich.
The flower girls were Annie Brennen, Mary Conley, Gladys Gavigan and Ethel Gavigan, and they were under the direction of Mrs. Maggie Purcell. The Knights of Columbus of which he was a member, attended in a body.
The interment took place in Calvary cemetery overlooking the valley where he spent his life.
