Age 46 years, six days

Obituary Smithfield Herald March 3, 1892

Died in Bentonville township, Johnston County, N. C. on Monday, February 15th 1892, Mary E. Britt, wife of G.R. Britt aged 46 years and six days. She leaves a husband, six children and a large circle of friends to mourn their loss. She was a sufferer of heart disease and consumption for a number of years until death relieved her and the angels bore her across the river where the surges cease to roll, and she is now resting on that bright and peaceful shore with loved ones gone before.
She was a kind wife and an affectionate mother, true and faithful to the duties incumbent upon her. All those who knew her possess tae treasured recollection that she was not unmindful of her duty to God. Charity, patience and purity were the crowing ornaments of her life. But she is gone, her chair is vacant, her place is unoccupied, her voice is no longer heard among us. She rests from her labors, but the light of her consistent life will shine on, guiding the feet of her loving companion and motherless children and loved ones to the realms of eternal day., and though torn from the embrace of the loved ones here she is united with those who have gone before.
Her suffering during her last days was great but she bore it with Christian patience. I visited her a great many times during here sickness and never heard a murmur escape her lips. Her vicinity has lost a rare jewel, her place will be hard to fill.
During her life her neighbors honored her. For the old she had a word of cheer, for the middle aged a word of encouragement and for the young words of advice. All feared her with a loving fear. Then, weep not friends and relatives for she is not dead but sleepeth. To the family we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

Rest thou faithful one, sweetly rest,
Thou hath served well the days,
Thou has been faithful and patient on earth,
Now thy lot is one long sunny May.

Thou hast set a bright example
That will guide others on life's sea,
Thou has borne the trials of many years;
But now they spirit is free.

Then weep not friends and loved ones,
But look for the hour to be released
From this world of sin and decay,
Where you can join her in perfect peace.
