Crown Princess of Norway by marriage. Born Princess of Sweden and (until 1905) Norway. A Bernadotte princess at birth, second daughter of Prince Carl of and his Princess Ingeborg from Denmark. Märtha married the future King Olav V of Norway in 1929 and became the mother of Princess Ragnhild Alexandra, Princess Astrid Maud Ingeborg and King Harald V of Norway. The couple befriended President and Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt during an American visit and had an extensive tour of the Upper Midwest where many Norwegian immigrants had settled. It was a strong friendship, and they went into exile in the United States during WW2. As many couples during the time, they were separated for much of the war with Crown Prince Olav usually in London. Their repatriation took place in 1945. Märtha died from a long cancerous illness three years before her husband ascended the throne as king. A remembrance of Crown Princess Märtha is her monumental statue in Washington DC.
