Sir John Stockton, Lord Mayor of London, 1470-71


"In St. Pancras church, Sopar lane, (now Bow lane,) were buried the following mercers, viz. . . . John Stockton, mayor, 1470"


"Sir John Stockton . . . Son to Richard Stockton, of Bratoft, Lincolnshire. He was one of the twelve aldermen who were knighted for opposing the bastard Falconbridge."

In Edward IV.'s reign, when the Lancastrians, under the bastard Falconbridge, stormed the City in two places, but were eventually bravely repulsed by the citizens, Edward, in gratitude, knighted the mayor, Sir John Stockton, and twelve of the aldermen.

Maior, Sir Iohn Stockton, Mercer, sonne to Richard Stockton, of Bratoft in Lincolneshire. Thomas Nevil, the Bastard Falconbridge, with a riotous company, The insurrection of the Bastard Faulconbridge and his complices. did this yeere set upon this Citie, at Aldgate, Bishops-gate, the Bridge, &c. And twelve Aldermen, with the Recorder were Knighted in the field, by Edw. the fourth, to wit, Iohn Stockton, Maior; Ralph Verney, late Maior; Iohn Yong, late Maior; William Taylor, late Maior; Richard a Lee, late Maior; Mathew Philips, The most of these Knights were afterward made Maiors. late Maior, George Ireland; William Stocker; William Hampton; Thomas Stalbrooke; Iohn Crosby; Bartholomew Iames; and Thomas Vrswike, Recorder.

"In the yeare 1471, John Stockton, mayor, and eleven aldermen of London, with the recorder, were all made knightes in the fielde by Edward IV., for their good service done to him."—1st edition, p. 81.

Then, Parish Chruch of S. Pancrate. in Needlers lane have yee the Parish Church of Saint Pancrate, a proper small Church, but divers rich Parishioners therein, and hath had, of old time, many liberall Benefactors: But of late, such as (not regarding the order taken by Queene Elizabeth) the least Bell in their Church being broken, Iustices charged to punish such as sell Bels from their Churches, have rather sold the same for halfe the value, than put the Parish to charge with new casting: late experience hath proved this to bee true, besides the spoyle of Monuments there.


In this Church are buried Sir Aker, Iohn Aker, Iohn Barnes, Mercer, Maior, 1370. Iohn Beston, and his wife, Robert Rayland, Iohn Hamber, Iohn Gage, Iohn Rowley, Iohn Lambe, Iohn Hadley, Grocer, Maior, 1379. Richard Gardener, Mercer, Maior, 1478. Iohn Stockton, Mercer, Maior, 1470. Iohn Dane, Mercer, Iohn Parker, Robert Marshall, Alderman, 1439. Robert Corcheford, Robert Hatfield, and Robert Hatfield, Nicholas Wilfilde, and Thomas his sonne, the Monuments of all which bee defaced and gone.

King Edward IV, (1442-1483), was King from 1461 until October 1470. With help from John Stockton, the Sheriff of London, Edward regained his Crown in April 1471. "Sir John Stockton . . . Son to Richard Stockton, of Bratoft, Lincolnshire. He was one of the twelve aldermen who were knighted for opposing the bastard Falconbridge."
