Louise LOCKAMY SMITH ARRANTS

COLUMBIA — Louise Smith Arrants died November 17, 2009, at her residence.

She was born July 24, 1921, in Olympia Mill Village, Columbia, S.C., the daughter of Joseph and Irma Lockamy. She graduated from Olympia High School in 1938. After graduating, she married George Frederick Smith, with whom she raised three children. Louise is testimony that with hard work and personal thrift, all things are possible.

Louise was a homemaker, then a bookkeeper for Edisto Dairy, and Lyles Bissett Carlisle and Wolfe. She and Fred were the proud owners of an ice cream shop for many years. A child of the Great Depression, Louise's lifelong dream was to own her own home, which she accomplished in 1962. Life was good.

After Fred's death in 1999, Louise married George Arrants in 2000, with whom she spent her remaining years.

Louise is survived by her husband, George, and her three children, Linda S. Hughes, Gerald F. Smith, and Susan S. Sox, all of Columbia. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Debbie H. Samples and Diane H. Baker of Columbia, Merritt Louise Smith of Houston, and Travis Gilham of San Antonio, Texas; and six great-grandchildren.

At every turn, Louise was a good and honest person. The family wishes to thank all who provided Louise with love and care during her final days. Services will be held on Saturday, November 21st at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Shandon United Methodist Church, followed by burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, S.C. Family will receive friends at the home of Pat and Gerald Smith, 3115 Duncan Street, Columbia, S.C., after the burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank. Arrangements by Greenlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, S.C.
