Unangax̂ people have lived on Atux̂ Island for thousands of years and respectfully burying or mummifying the deceased for thousands of years. In 1741, European explorers arrived in the region in search of fur mammal hides. In 1867, the US purchased Alaska from Russia. In 1942, the Japanese Imperial Military bombed Unalaska, invaded Attu, and took 42 Attuan people to Japan as prisoner of war where 24 Attuans passed way. After World War II ended, the US goverrnment refused to allow the Attuan people to return to their beloved village.
