Add PhotosThis was a tiny family cemetery that contained 2 adult graves: Hattie Wade and Zilpha Norris. In 1988, I went to it for the first and only time with my mother & her cousin. Presently, the only evidence that it ever existed is a sketched map I drew of the site and surrounding area. Located not far down a dirt road, it lay just off to the side of a freshly tilled crop field. To my teenage mind, it somewhat looked like a water-less oasis in the desert, lush with green surrounded by dirt. It was bounded by a chain-link fence (installed by other Wade relatives over a decade earlier) and seemed to be in pretty good shape, despite being slightly overgrown. After my older cousin and I cleared the overgrowth, my mom snapped a few photos while I quickly sketched a map of the area. I'm glad I did...Sadly, this cemetery no longer exists. Fifteen years after our visit, other Wade relatives traveled to the site to see it and pay respects -- only to discover that the field had been completely plowed over. The fence was gone; only remnants of gravestones were found. No mention was made of the Hodges/Ivey cemetery (which was a larger area at least 3 times the size of the Norris/Wade site). I assumed it too fell victim, though I don't know for sure. I regret that we didn't take photos of those grave markers too, but at the time that cemetery wasn't our main focus that day. I wish I had...Yet on that particular day, I had a prompting to quickly record what we saw, so I listened and acted accordingly. Had I not, no one would've ever known where Hattie Wade's and her mother Zilpha Norris' final resting place was. And for that I'm truly thankful.
