"The Crater farm," on which the U.S. Civil War Battle of the Crater took place on July 30th, 1864, was a tract of land owned by William H. Griffith, whose dwelling was located at the junction of Jerusalem Plank Road and Baxter Road, in the vicinity of where the State of Massachusetts Monument now stands. The house was burned in mid-June 1864 and after the war Griffith built another, about 75 yards southwest of the Crater. The burials are noted in "Our Gallant Dead" in The Daily Phoenix newspaper, Columbia, S.C., issue of May 24, 1866: "The Petersburg Index has been furnished with the following additional names of Confederate soldiers buried on the Crater farm."
