Add PhotosThe Janes family came into the Frio Canyon in the 1870's and settled in the Kent Creek Canyon in what was then known as Bexar Territory. They had run cattle in Kimble, Mason and Gillespie counties and as far west as the Devil's River.
A disagreement over the ownership of a bull ended in a shooting and the family fled to the Frio River area and to the Kent Creek Canyons. Ed Janes was charged with murder and eluded the law by living in a cave several years until the case was dismissed.
The first documented grave in this cemetery is that of three year old Jesse Janes in 1881. A few years later a daughter Margaret Ferguson died in childbirth, leaving an infant daughter who was raised by Hannah and Ed Janes. Other families who buried members here are Large, Crum and Ramsey. It is suspected that others are also buried here in this cemetery.
The condition is deplorable as the fence long ago fell into disrepair and there is constant desecration of some of the graves.
A legend exists that there are two unknown graves a short distance from the cemetery.
