Add PhotosThe Temple of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a significant Catholic site situated in the San Sebastián neighborhood within Mexico City's Historic Center. Originating as the chapel for the Carmelite convent's third order in Mexico during the late 18th century, the site earned historical monument status in 1931.
Initially occupying the hermitage of San Sebastián, the Carmelites eventually constructed a larger complex nearby due to space constraints. However, in 1607, the parish territory shifted to the Augustinians, prompting the Carmelites to distance themselves. The convent saw several constructions and renovations, culminating in a new temple in the 18th century. Yet, conflicts and the Mexican War of Independence hindered its development.
The 19th century brought further upheaval, leading to the destruction of the Carmelite complex, leaving only the third order church preserved. Despite subsequent expansions and remodeling, the temple sustained damage during earthquakes in 1985 and 2017. However, restoration efforts have been ongoing, allowing the temple to remain open for worship, albeit now administered by a different religious congregation.
