In 1682/3 Major Robert Peyton received a grant of 150 acres on the north side of Blackwater Creek. Thomas Peyton, gentleman, received a patent of 110 acres in 1738 on Blackwater Creek. The property adjoined that of Robert Peyton. The original Peyton house was built by Major Robert Peyton in the late 1600's, said to have been a comfortable dwelling, made of stone. It was pulled down in the mid-1800's and replaced with the present wooden structure by Wade Mosby; second husband to Elizabeth Tabb Patterson, widow of Thomas Robinson Yeatman. She was legally powerless to stop him. Thomas Yeatman had inherited the property from his father. The Yeatman family had purchased "Isleham" from the Peyton family. The foundation of the original Peyton dwelling was found in the late 1900's when later owners ran underground water and wiring to their pier on Blackwater Creek.

This area was once Kingston Parish, part of Gloucester County, prior to the creation of Mathews County in 1791.
