This was a family burial plot on the land of Dawson Cooke as documented in Mildred Cooke widow's pension application W4657, for service of Dawson Cooke (Midn., Va. Sea Service, Rev. War), Revolutionary War Pensions and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files, NARA microfilm M804, roll 642.

In the affidavit of Rev. John Spencer, the widower of Mary "Molly" Cooke, oldest child of Dawson and Mildred Cooke, he states that Dawson and Mildred had seven children, "Mary, Ann, Paschal, Mildred who married William Howlet, Henry, Dawson, and Giles. That of these Ann C. Brushwood is the only surviving child. That Mary died in the year 1802 on the 8th day of March. That all of said children except Giles & Dawson were buried in the family burial ground of said Dawson Cooke (first named above) in this vicinity and that there is not a tombstone in the said burying ground nor over the graves of said Dawson Cooke (first named above) or Mildred Cooke (first named above) nor over the graves of either of their children buried there." Rev. Spencer added that Dawson was "elected a sheriff of this county…"
