Add PhotosÉglise Saint-Martin de Chantenay is in the former commune of Chantenay-sur-Loire. It is now in the Bellevue-Chantenay-Sainte Anne district of Nantes. Parish registers show that the Saint-Martin parish dates back to at least 1567. The church was rebuilt and enlarged over the years. The church was demolished and a new church was begun in 1759, with the final renovation completed in 1841. The cemetery was removed during the expansion and the remains were placed in an ossuary.
There is a plaque on the church, commemorating the large Acadian community in Chantenay following the Seven Years' War, as this is the church they attended. Many of the Acadians left to settle in Louisiana, USA, but some of the Acadians settled in Chantenay permanently.
There is also a beautiful Acadian Memorial fresco by Robert Dafford, commemorating their stay in Chantenay from 1775 to 1785. It is also an 18th century depiction of the Port of Nantes and the Quai de la Fosse.
The church was placed under the protection of historical monuments on 26 March 1990. There are no traces of the cemetery today.
