Gravestone found in woods off of St. Clair Road in Alexander County, NC. Gravestone only says "Robert Mitchell of Londonderry Ireland". Foot stone has only the initials R.M. There are no birth or death dates on the stone, and there are no other graves nearby. The closest cemetery is Salem Lutheran Church cemetery a little over half a mile away. Little River Baptist Church Cemetery is about a mile away. The distance between the headstone and footstone is only about 3 feet, so Robert Mitchell may have been a child when he died. There is a semi-circle of football-sized rocks around the headstone and footstone. A local history professor believes the grave to be from the early to mid 1800s, but said it could be older. If anyone has any information on this man it would be appreciated.
