Hanover-Linden Sub-Camp
Also known as Hannover-Mühlenberg-Linden subcamp , KZ-Außenlager Hannover-Mühlenberg
Hanover, Region Hannover, Lower Saxony, Germany
Built in early February 1945 as a satellite camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp. Operated for two months until it was cleared on April 6, 1945.
Approximately 500 prisoners (mainly Polish and Hungarians Jews) from the Laurahütte concentration camp were forced to work here for either the Hannoversche Maschinenbau (Hanomag) or Rheinmetall- Borsig firms that produced antiaircraft weapons. At least 79 prisoners died as a result of the difficult working conditions.
The camp was evacuated on 6 April 1945, and the prisoners embarked on an two day march to Bergen-Belsen. 36 prisoners who collapsed during the march were shot. Around 100 sick prisoners and those unable to march were initially left behind in Mühlenberg. At least 50 of them were shot in the camp before the remaining prisoners were taken to Bergen-Belsen.
The commandant of the camp was SS-Oberscharführer Walter Friedrich Wilhelm Quakernack. A British military tribunal found him guilty of the murder of inmates on the evacuation march to Bergen- Belsen and of
ordering guards to shoot those too weak to march. He was sentenced to death and hanged in October 1946.
After the war, the stone barracks were occupied by refuges; they were demolished in 1960. In 1978, the Hannover City Council erected a memorial plaque on the site of the former camp. Since 1982, the plaque is on display in the foyer of the Mühlenberg Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Church.
