This large family cemetery is located in the woods off Ballards Mill Road. It is neglected with many trees and shrubs growing in it. Many of the vertical cut stones have fallen. Some are buried under up to 3 inches of soil. There are many fieldstone markers.
In the Daily Progress of June 9, 1955, page 16, is a story of the Harris Plantation house. Another story ran in the July 17, 1958 edition, page 17. Parts of the house were over 200 years old. The land was settled by James Harris and wife Elizabeth. The land grant included the area where Free Union stands today. James and Elizabeth had 6 sons and 5 daughters. He called the house "Meadow Bluffs".
The last of the Harris family to live there was Reuben Harris. After the Civil War he was forced to sell off some of the land. Several African-Americans acquired small pieces of it by working on the place, and taking part of their pay in land.
The land left the Harris family in 1891 when it was purchased by A. R. Via and his wife.
R. F. Harris, a descendant, and future mayor of Charlottesville, sold the land to the Vias.
