Add PhotosThis was an African-American cemetery. It appears that the burials in this cemetery have either been destroyed or moved to central burial grounds on the Cherry Point Marine Air Station in Havelock, NC.
Many of the residents of the black community around the Little Witness Baptist Church in the 1920s and 1930s were buried with small metal and paper markers that have not survived the last 40 years. (from a Dept. of the Navy report dated 1941).
The United States Congress approved the purchase of a tract of land in the vicinity of the Neuse River in Craven County, North Carolina on July 16, 1941. Thereafter, a survey was taken of the cemeteries in the area which were to be affected by the erection of the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, NC.
The 1941 survey noted that there was another cemetery previous to naming it Little Witness Baptist Church Cemetery which had 40-50 burials, mostly unmarked.
Little Witness was a black settlement at the intersection of Hancock Creek and the Beaufort Road (Highway 101).
The memorials noted herein are from a 1997 listing.
