DESCRIPTION:
"Village View: was built on a high hill not very far from Dinwiddie Court House.
At the time that it was built, you could view the village of Dinwiddie from the
hill upon which it was built, hence the name "Village View".
The house was constructed of original growth pine timbers, hand-hewn and whip-
sawed. It had a rock foundation. The chimneys were of stone and handmade
brick. It was of old English type architecture. Although this was a lovely old
home and housed several notable families, it has fallen into decay. All that
remains at the present time, is the stone foundation, the chimneys and part of
the framework.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:
This home remained in the Pegram family until 1828, when it was sold by John C. Pegram to James Goodwyn, who left it to his son, William H. Goodwyn. It was sold by William H. Goodwyn to John W. Gilliam in 1840. It was deeded to the
E.H. Smith family by John W. Gilliam and wife in 1851. This home remained in the Smith family until 1899, at which time it was sold to W.M. Sterne by C.A. Crawford, trustee for W. Gay Smith. At the present time (1936), "Village View"
is owned by W.P. Sterne of Dinwiddie, Virginia, who inherited part interest from this father, W.M. Sterne, and has also purchased the interests of his mother and
