Highland Recorder October 21, 1898
The colored church east of town was dedicated Sunday with a large audience in attendance. The Presiding elder and pastor were in charge of the dedicatory service, followed by an appropriate sermon preached in the grove near the church. The collection taken was not sufficient to meet the indebtedness, but the balance was assumed by the trustees. The colored people now have a neat little sanctuary, for which they have worked very hard and looked forward to a long time and now that they have it, they can accomplished much for the Master. This is the only colored church in the Monterey & Blue Grass districts.
October 7, 1898
Colored Church Dedicated: The A.M.E. church recently built near Monterey by the colored people of this section will be dedicated Sunday Oct. 16. Bishop James A. Handy is expected to be present. Rev. J.E. Cook, Presiding Elder, the pastor of the church and other ministers will be present.

HOUSE BURNS
The small house formerly used by the colored folks as a parsonage, located near their church, a mile east of town, was burned down last Saturday night. For a few weeks a colored man, Paul Carter, who came here from McDowell side, had been living or camping in the house and it is supposed he had made a fire in the old stove before coming to town, as no one was present when the building burned. Carter had nothing to loose but some house hold goods stored there by the Beard family before they left for Pennsylvania were lost. Their value is unknown.
