Pittsville
Farmers Fork, Essex County, Virginia, USA
Thomas Pitts died leaving a will [Essex Co. Wills, Bk. 24, p. 620, dated 18 JUL 1841, proved 16 AUG 1841] that named sons Thomas H. Pitts, George R. Pitts, David Pitts, Robert Pitts, Benjamin, Richard H. Pitts, and daughters Ann Pitts (married Stephen D. Pitts), and Mary Ella Pitts (married David Pitts Wright of "Wrightsville," King and Queen County). He devised land to his son Richard H. Pitts "the plantation I live on, reserving 1/2 acre, the family burying ground, which I wish kept as such, and not to be [appropriated] to any other purposes."
Immediately after his inheritance, Richard H. Pitts sold the 200-acre tract on which the cemetery stood to his brother-in-law David Pitts Wright (d. 1855) in February 1842, and the deed did not reflect a reserve for the burying ground [Essex Co. Deeds, Bk. 42, p. 279]. Wright disposed of the property in August 1854 in an exchange with John H. and Sally Ann Clarkson [Essex Co. Deeds, Bk. 50, p. 709].
Virginia Death Certificates for Sarah Frances Williams (1916), Nancy Holloway Williams (1916), and Mary Kay (1914) also note initial burial here. Both of these are now found at Enon Baptist Church.
Frances Brown, daughter of Meredith Brown and Frances Gouldman, was born 14 AUG 1820 in Essex County, married by bond 18 MAR 1844 there to Henry P. Watts, and was initially buried at Pittsville. Her grave was also removed to Enon Baptist Church.
