Add PhotosThis property contained the last known stable of privately owned horses in Arlington County, through the late 1960s/early 1970s. The property was bought by Arlington County and was converted into Douglas Park, with 2 picnic pavilions, a toddlers playground, a separate swing area and a volleyball court, with access from 2 primary entrances and one open lot on the west side of South Qunicy Street, one broad entrance in the 1600 block of South Randolph Street and one entrance on the even side of South Stafford Street.
The New Arlington/Douglas Park Civic Association paid for a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) search of one small section of the farm directly behind the chain link fences at the rear of the row of houses on the south side of South 16th Street just east of South Randolph Street and two grave sized anomalies where clearly noted in the area adjacent to a small tree.
Long-time neighborhood residents in attendance, including this Contributor (e49 - # 46944208), advised the coordinator and radar technician of a second group of approximately 4-6 tombstone marked graves last seen, circa mid-1960s in the far southwest corner of the property behind the chain link fence of 4105 or 4109 South 18th Street, in the lowest part of the small valley, which faced north toward the remainder of the farm. It was deterimed at the time that neither time, nor funds were available to GPR search that area at that time. This second area remains un-surveyed to this day.
A third cluster of graves is reported to have been in the area along the same chain link fence line at the rear of the South 16th Street houses, about 200' east of the 2 graves found and within a few yards of the northern most park entrance off South Quincy Street.
Anyone having knowledge of any of these graves is encouraged to contact this Contributor and/or the Hostorian of the New Arlington/Douglas Park Civic Association.
