A new church for the St Lawrence with St John parish was built in 1842 at 55 High Street. It was designed in early Gothic style with a spire added in 1861. St Lawrence with St John church was closed down in 1923 due to a dwindling congregation, and demolished soon after. A Barclays' Bank building was later built on the site, and then converted to a public house.

A churchyard was not associated with the new parish church building. By the time the new church was built, the Southampton Old Cemetery was open and would have been used for most burials in the city. A large churchyard was also associated with St Mary Church and this served other parishes in the old Southampton city. Before then, however, the site of the old medieval church of St John on French Street was used as a small burial ground for the St Lawrence with St John parish. It is now paved over and used as a car park for the St John's Primary and Nursery School. A burial register covering the period 1768-1813 is available at the Hampshire Archives for the St Lawrence with St John parish.
