Old Burying Ground at Cedar Grove
Paytes, Spotsylvania County, Virginia, USA
The following information is provided by Charles Rupert Loucks.
The cemetery is the section on the left (with no markers left, now that Frank Sullivan's has disappeared). The NEW PART is the part to the right, the part with markers. The Frank Sullivan house lay to the right of the burying ground. The family archives of Rudolph Ivan Jones state
about 13 people were buried in the old part:
1-2. Francis/Frank & Frances Newton Sullivan;
3-4. Newton Sullivan (b. 1781- died 1865, at home of daughter Mary Sullivan Wallace, and brought back by son-in-law Churchill Jones for burial) and his wife Anne (Nancy) McDorman Sullivan (died 1869, at home of son-in-law Churchill Jones near Locust Grove);
5-6. "Bill" Sullivan & Lucy Ann Fisher
7-8 Billy Fisher (a Revolutionary soldier) and his wife Sally Cox, who wed when he was 70 and she 17. (Sally was the daugher of "Old Lettius" Sullivan, sister of Francis Sullivan, who married Frank Cox. This is an old name, pronounced like "lettuce"). Billy and Sally Cox Fisher's children were Lucy Ann (noted above) plus John and Sam Fisher. Lucy Ann Fisher (who as noted above was, I believe, the wife of "Bill" Sullivan) had a son William who is also buried in this Old Part.
Also in the Old Part:
Aunt Jane Sullivan Almond, daughter of Newton & Nancy Sullivan, plus her first husband, Oscar Almond. (Jane subsequently married Churchill Jones, son of Fielding).
(see more burials below).
Note: About l/2 mile beyond the cemetery was the farm owned by David McDorman (before he moved to the Wilderness area).(David's son Peter McDorman married Jane/Jincey Sullivan, daughter of Frank and thus sister of Woodson.)
Francis/Frank and Francis Newton Sullivan were succeeded as the farm's residents by Newton and Anne/Nancy McDorman Sullivan, and all the latter couple's children were born here.
Newton & Nancy were succeeded as farm residents by their daughter Serepta Sullivan (1837-1897) and her husband "Q"/Que Sullivan (1835-1902)
